IN HIS OWN WORDS:
KOUROSH SADEGHI
I realised early that I shouldn't be in the rat race of doing gemstones only for the sake of money. I really love what I do.
Every stone has its own personality. It's own specification or colour. Unique shapes, unique lustre.
I focus on the type of merchandise that people can still appreciate later in life. It's like a nice piece of property in central Bangkok or central London. It stays in the family to be enjoyed by children and grandchildren.
When I want to relax, sometimes I just bring in my stones and go through them. I wash my eyes with them. I enjoy looking at them and appreciating their beauty.
What we do is unheated. There is no alteration except cutting and polishing. So it's very specialised.
Yesterday, there was a parcel here of about 50 rubies. Out of those, I could only select two.
After years in the trade, my customers know, "Hey, Kourosh has done the screening already. What comes from his hand has already been checked. He doesn't buy borderline stones that are good under some lights and not good under other lights."
I'm very picky when it comes to colour, because a ruby must be red and it must be a happy red. If it's a sad red, then what do we have to celebrate?
When customers think of colour stones, they think of Kourosh. Luxury brands often call me needing one stone to create a matching set, like for a pair of earrings. With the expertise that I earned during the last 20 years, and the knowledge of cutting that I have, I've been able to achieve what my customers wanted.
I learned during all these years that I just have to be myself and be honest. It's all about honesty, it's about what you're good at. It's about what your eyes have been trained for.
My favourite customer stories are the ones where I see the happiness in my customers' eyes.
I listen to my feelings, which is against the nature of our business.
In Kenya I went to places like Lodwar. I spent a lot of time there. I met the miners, I sat down with them, I ate with them. I spent nights in a simple shelter, just a roof above my head. There was no running water for 15 days.
I went to Tanzania to look for stones. The place that I was heading to, called Tunduru, the whole village was under water. The miners had to dive down 15 or 20 metres, holding their breath, in order to bring up one load of soil.
I now realise how hard the journey is for one stone to end up on my table in Bangkok. I appreciate it, I study it properly, and I don't pass on it quickly.
Never could I imagine making even a simple living with gems. But to build a successful business and raise a family is beyond wildest dreams.
